Proofing White Ink + CMYK

Post by jasonx »

Hey everyone,

What is your solution to proofing CMYK + White ink jobs ?

We sometimes have issues with the customer not undertstanding overprint, knock out etc and the position of design elements in their files.

Do you just give them a proof with their separations? Educate them to use Acrobat to proof?

We often have this issue - a lot of the pdf viewers that our customer have don't show things like overprint.

How I get around it often depends on the particular artwork.
  • Sometimes I'll rasterise the artwork to simulate the overprint of a white spot.
  • If the art is more complex I'll have 3 versions of the file in a layout - 1 showing a composite file (like the rasterised version as before),
1 showing the colour info only, and 1 showing the white only.
  • Or if the white is only going under colour, I'll often send the proof with the white spot removed.
I haven't really found a one-size-fits-all solution for this - it's usually customer and job dependant.
