Switch with Acrobat

Post by alahode »

Hi everyone,

I'm currently doing my first tests with Acrobat and Switch.
First of all just a simple thing, open PDF via Switch app in Acrobat and save as TIF.
Unfortunately that doesn't work. Acrobat always crashes when opening, in the Switch messages it says ‘Failed to start Acrobat “/Applications/Adobe Acrobat DC/Adobe Acrobat.app”’.
When I open Acrobat again, I see that AcrobatResponseFile has been tried to open.

Acrobat is not the problem. I can start it via a Droplet, without any problems.
We use Acrobat version 24 and Switch 2024 Fall on macOS 15.3.2.

Any ideas?
Thanks for the answers.

I would use GhostScript with the Switch app Run Command instead of using the Acrobat Pro desktop app.

1. Install GhostScript (https://www.ghostscript.com/releases/gsdnld.html)

2. Install the Run Command app in Switch

3. Download this flow and edit the paths to your prefered CMYK ICC profile:

If you have PitStop Server you may as well use PDF2Image that can output TIFF files.

As both Magnus and Loïc states there are better and faster ways to do this. Anyway I just tested and the conversion via Acrobat works fine for me. Switch 2024 Fall, Acrobat 2024, Mac OS 14.7.4

Thank you for your answers.

I'll have to take a closer look at Ghostscript.

The TIFF export was just an example for testing to see if it works at all.
In the end, I would like to use Acrobat preflight profiles or control Acrobat via Javascript. And also print PDF files, because Acrobat simulates overprinting.

I'm afraid that the problem might be with macOS 15.2.3.
@Terkelsen: What Version of Acrobat 2024? I have 24.005.20320

Hi,

Keep in mind that Acrobat is not a "server" based app. In that sense, it may not have the staibility and performance other applications may have.

Apart from preflight, what is it that you want to automate in Acrobat?

Hi Loic,

printing PDFs is one such point - with simulated overprinting, that's important for us.

PitStop Server's output to image also simulates overprinting, transparencies, ICC-tagged images, output intents, ... and it can use antialiasing.

Exactly, and there are apps in the Enfocus Appstore that you can use to send to print as well.
Plus with PitStop Server, not only you can convert to image but you can use prerendering action lists if you want for ex to add variables elements, change page boxes…

I now do the perendering via PitStop Server. I had thought about it before, but found printing directly from Acrobat easier and faster. But this looks like the only solution.

Thanks to all of you.
