Color Managment with ICC Tagged Gray

Post by dbarbee »

We're beginning the process of switching to a color managed workflow. Using Pitstop Server, I'm converting everything to PDF/X-4 with GRACoL 2013_CRP6 as the output intent.

Gray images are tagged with FujiFilm Generic Gray3.icc. When viewing these (in Acrobat) through GRACoL output simulation, the gray image is displaying a 4-color build. I'm assuming this is because GRACoL is a CMYK profile, and will preview as such. The suggested solutions are for options I cannot find, such as "Force gray to keep same intensity" (https://cdn.enfocus.com/manuals/Referen ... 42222.html) or remapping to DeviceGray, which I cannot figure out how to do. I could use some advice about tagging elements and best practices around this. The default PDF/X-4 Acrobat Preflight Profile doesn't tag the images, and they separate correctly as 100%K on the preview with a GRACoL output preview.

Ultimately, we need our digital printers to recognize these gray/black-only pages so we are not charged for Color Clicks. When images are 0%CMY100%K, they are recognized as color.

Hi
Because the image has the image tagged with a profile you get a false reading in acrobat.
Acrobat simulates the CMYK values by converting embedded images with profiles to the output profile on the fly.
Untag the Gray profile and your numbers will revert to the real numbers.

I believe the "image mask" thing is leading you astray. The colour of an image mask is only used to determine transparency, it is not the colour of the actual object. You typically don't want image masks to be tagged with ICC profiles, but that's a different matter.

To see the real colour of the object, switch to the "Fill and stroke" tab of the inspector. There you may see it uses CMYK, or RGB, or something else. For a QR code you'll typically want to make sure it's DeviceCMYK or DeviceGray. To convert, use the "Actions" menu - still on the "Fill and stroke" tab of the Inspector.
