external app to merge PDFs with bookmarks

Dear Switch Users - looking for your recommendation for a tool / software that would allow for merging hundreds of PDFs in one go (hundreds of megabytes) building bookmarks from the input filenames.
The native MERGE element does not offer this functionality.
So far I have been using PDF Combine PRO from CoolUtils, but the more files it has to process in one go, the less reliable it is, frequently hanging / crashing on larger jobs. It then corrupts the final PDF bookmarks and in the end releases 2 separate PDFs (one corrupted, second one OK) but after very long time 15-20 minutes per merge, which is not good enough.
This we use within Switch, invoking with a simple BAT script, so ideally would be happy to find a similar functionality but more reliable, somewhere else (some other software).

Who's using what, please share some experience in this area.

Merging PDFs with callas PDFtoolbox preserves bookmarks, but does not create ones, so the bookmarks has to be created before merging.
But there are several CLI-based tool for manipulating bookmarks available, maybe you place the question in the scripting forum.
