Switch Hardware question - which Mac to use ?

Post by MitchSharpe »

Hello all,

We've been running Switch on 3 Xserves (2 production, 1 Dev) for some time. Its looking like we have to replace one of them due to a CPU issue and Im wondering if anyone else out there also uses Macs to run Switch and if so any new installs in the last few months ?

Choice is down to a MacMini with SSDs or my preference being a MacPro which I would think would be more grunty, as we not only run Switch but also Claro and Callas on the same box.

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated !

Regards

Mac Mini with 16GB RAM and OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD runs Switch really well.

MacPro 3,1 with 8 GB RAM – runs

But I think, it depends on your needs/throughput.

Switch 12 seems to tun faster than 11.

I don't think you are going to find a Mini with enough CPU's to support everything. I think you'd have to go with a Mac Pro. A mini with SSD's would be a screamer though. How many concurrent processes do you run now? That will be the deciding factor.

This is what Im getting after your ( and local Switch rep ) input ...

Mac Pro 3.5GHz 6-core E5

32Gb ram

512Gb PCIe Flash "drive"

Dual D300 2Gb Graphics card

Doubtful. Maybe in a VMWare/VirtualBox VM it could.

Thanks Matt ...

Will look into a VM ... should be do-able, I mean most of our Enterprise infrastructure is all VM these days ...
