How to resolve page box errors

Hi,

Where I work we have a consistent problem with page box errors when outputting from xmpie or today it happened when exporting an imposition from Kodak Prinergy. I don't know if the two are related but I am looking for a quick-fix to this issue and some enlightenment.

When using xmpie with inDesign, many times when we export with variable data the impositions that are output have the resultant pages offset from the cropmarks. By this I mean, say for example you have a 3.5 x 2 business card that is placed into inDesign as a pdf with it's own pre-existing cropmarks, when it is output from xmpie the cropmarks are misaligned, typically with only the bottom left-hand corner cropmarks seen because the placement is off-centered up and to the right somewhat.

One workaround we have found is to delete any extraneous page boxes from the source pdf, usually the crop box and the artbox and then we output again.

Within Pitstop, I may have used Page Rotation fix to resolve this with the Normalize Page Rotate Key.

However, I did have once instance where this did not work and I used Remove all Metadata and that seemed to work.

And then I had an error today where I added two pages (see above). I believe that the Bottom column (circled above) had different numbers on the two pages added that differed from what is seen here. They may been .5334 or some other arbitrary number. My point is that having different numbers in that Bottom column even though the width and height of the other respective Page Boxes were all identical, affected the outcome of the imposition with all the cards that were imposed on pages 1 and 3 being off-centered.

What I did to resolve it was to copy page 2 and duplicate it twice. I then deleted the existing content and pasted page 1 to one empty page and page 3 to the other empty page and centered both to the bleed box and this resolved the issue.

However, my question is could this have been resolved with an Action that I am unaware of?

And is this a separate issue (conundrum) of skewed page boxes when outputting from xmpie as described above? If so, how to resolve that issue with a Pitstop Action?

Thanks for your help

Neil

Hi Neil,

So if my udnerstanding is correct:
  1. You place a PDF into an InDesign template. That PDF presenting trim marks of its own.
  • You set VDP job in InDesign and produces pages.
  • You export PDF out of InDesign (adding marks there?)
  • You open in Acrobat and notice that from pages to pages, page boxes coordinates changed.
First, if that is correct, I would report to XMPie as this is not correct behaviour. But I can't really explain what could cause such a random move.

Now, considering that the initially placed PDF has trim marks. You may simply remove any page boxes, then call the "Use trim marks to set page boxes".
Then you kind of normalize page boxes based on the file marks.

Could that work for you?
