what is the best/simplest way to add 3mm bleed (mirroring and extending coloured boxes) and make the page 3mm bigger all around, have tried the bleed actions and they make the page larger, but I am struggling to make the images etc extend by 3mm where required and when I do the page stays as original size (ie A4)

Have you checked the default Action "Generate Bleed to 3mm if None, and Correctly Set all Page Boxes"
That should do it.

Thank you, thats great, it makes the page size bigger, which is what i wanted, but I also need the items that are closer than .5mm to the edge of the page to bleed, how would I do that?

Any ideas?

Select the object and look at the inspector the exact coordinates and dimensions, shall the object be a slight portion further, then it would be discarded.
Otherwise, you can either contact support if the file is not sharable or post your PDF here.

the black box remains as it was originally set, (A4)

Hi,
Applying your properties, it works fine to me. Might be something with the file, is the TrimBox defined?

thank you for your reply, the file is a straight export/save from word, it is how we expect many of the files to come to us.
Crop/Art/Trim/Bleed all have the same value 210 x 297mm. I can't upload a PDF here can i?

hello again, just tried it with a document from inDesign, that works as expected, guessing there is something in the export from word which is causing the action not to perform?

The Trim Box is not defined in your file.
Ty recreating this action list and run it BEFORE adding bleed.

You can as well force define trim box in the inspector, but for automation purpose, you would indeed need to ensure that the trim is defined.
Many ways to get there.

Thank you very much.
So does this mean that there would need to be a separate PPP to manage PDFs that come out of MS Office?
The PPP will sit in a linear production process with one PPP doing all checks on all PDFs no matter what the original application the PDF came
